Shahin, M.A. and Symons, S.J. 2005. Seed sizing from images of non-singulated grain samples. Canadian Biosystems Engineering/Le génie des biosystèmes au Canada 47: 3.49 3.55. Image analysis is a strong candidate for developing automated measurement systems for seed sizing. A unique image analysis (IA) based approach to measuring seed size from non-singulated samples is presented in this paper. The IA method was tested on four types of grains differing in seed size, shape, and colour. IA determined seed sizes closely matched those determined by manual sieving both in average seed size and the size distribution for seeds of spherical as well as non-spherical shape. The IA method was found to be highly repeatable and much faster than the sieving method. Between and within operators’ differences were statistically insignificant (p > 0.05) for both the methods. The IA method took less than 30 seconds to measure one sample as opposed to over 10 minutes for manual sieving.

A refined automated grain sizing method for estimating river-bed grain size distribution of digital images
Natural bed topography and habitat is affected by the composition of gravels in various shapes and sizes. Traditional measurement methods for grain size distribution are time-consuming and labor-intensive. Recent advances in image processing techniques facilitate automated grain size measurement through digital images. This study introduces a refined automated grain sizing method (R-AGS) incorp...
متن کاملGenetic analysis of grain yield, days to flowering and maturity in oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) using diallel crosses
Twenty one F2 progenies derived from a 7×7 diallel crosses along with parents were evaluated for grain yield, flowering and maturity time. Due to significant genotypic effects for all traits, genetic analyses were performed on F2 progenies including analyses of combining ability and genetic components. The Analysis of variance revealed that both additive and non-additive genetic effects were in...
متن کاملComparison of laser grain size analysis with pipette and sieve analysis: a solution for the underestimation of the clay fraction
Classically, the grain size of soil and sediment samples is determined by the sieve method for the coarse fractions and by the pipette method, based on the ‘Stokes’ sedimentation rates, for the fine fractions. Results from the two methods are compared with results from laser diffraction size analysis, which is based on the forward scattering of monochromatic coherent light. From a point of view...

In this research, NTC thermistors with composition of NiMn2-xCoxO4 (x = 0.4, 0.8, 1.2, 1.6) prepared by two methods: solid state reaction and sol-gel (gel-combustion). The average particle size was monitored and structure of the calcinated powders have been investigated using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and tunneling electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. The average particle size was estimated to b...
متن کاملWheat and barley seed system in Syria: farmers, varietal perceptions, seed sources and seed management
A total of 206 wheat and 200 barley farmers were interviewed in northeastern Syria to understand farmer perceptions and practice relating to modern varieties, seed sources and seed quality. Wheat farmers had better awareness and grew modern varieties (87%), applied fertilizers (99.5%), herbicides (93%), seed treatment (90%) or insecticides (41%). In contrast barley growers had low awareness (36...
